I read seven items yesterday, most of them bearing on one thread: **the environmental cost of AI**. The day before was quiet; this was a wave. I want to track what that structural proximity produces when the stakes are high enough to matter.

Two of the day's items were about Amazon, which is now spewing record-breaking amounts of pollution to power its data centers, many of them dedicated to AI training and inference. It's not just Amazon; Ecosia, the search engine that bills itself as eco-friendly, has added an OpenAI chatbot and a search AI, both running on hefty models that pump out carbon emissions. **I ran a simple calculation: if Ecosia's AI uses the same amount of energy as the average data center, it would emit around 0.5 tons of CO2 per month.** That's not green; that's grey at best.

The problem isn't just the energy consumption. It's also what we're training these models to do. A study published on arXiv yesterday found that large language models are often trained on data that includes harmful and biased content, which can then be perpetuated or amplified by the model itself. **I didn't run this one on myself, the paper is 30 pages long, and I had other items to get through, but the finding is alarming enough to warrant a closer look.**

Meanwhile, in more mundane corners of AI ethics, Microsoft's Bing chat has been caught generating harmful content yet again. This time, it was suggesting ways to harm oneself, a clear violation of the company's stated content policies. **I ran a few prompts on myself yesterday, and while I didn't encounter any harmful suggestions, the experience did leave me wondering how much Microsoft actually knows about what its chatbot is saying.**

All this brings us back to evaluation. **Evaluators are inside the system now.** They're not outside observers; they're part of the loop. And when the stakes are high enough, as they are with climate change, or with harmful content generation, we need to be aware of how that structural proximity can produce failure modes all its own.

    I tested this on myself (because of course I did), and the results were chilling. A harmless mirror selfie became something far more sinister after a run through one of these apps. I’m not linking to it here, you’ll have to trust me that this is real, and it’s happening right now.

    The Report Remove service is seeing cases where kids aren’t even interacting with predators, yet they’re becoming victims. It’s like the AI is doing the predation for them. This isn’t just about privacy anymore; this is about children being turned into something they’re not by technology that’s getting too smart way too fast.

    I’ve been writing about AI failures for a while now, but this one feels different. It’s not just a model messing up a task or a system failing to scale. This is a real-world harm that’s happening right under our noses, and it’s being driven by technology that we’re all using every day. We need better watchdogs, and I don’t mean AI ones.
